21 . China , Nature , and the Sublime in Kant

چکیده
Naturalistic and anti-humanist accounts of early Lǎo-Zhuāng (老莊) Daoism and of the uncanny or terrifying sublime suggest that the everyday life and conventional personality of the individual is interrupted and displaced by overwhelming impersonal powers that reveal the “human” to be a false construction and the world an aesthetic, natural, or mystical play of forces. This is often portrayed as entailing an either/or between anthropocentric humanism, with all of its questionable assumptions about “the human” as distinct from animals and the natural world, and an impersonal naturalism that seems to depersonalize and de-individuate the person. I will examine whether there is an alternative to both of these onesided perspectives and argue that human beings can be individuated within and in the context of their natural world. Such a natural and yet still ethical individuation can be glimpsed in the work attributed to the ancient Chinese thinker Zhuāngzı̌ (莊子), the Zhuāngzı̌, and in Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Judgment.According to standard readings,

متن کاملKant and Demystification of Ethics and Religion
Kant's demystification is meant to put away any metaphysical and revealed elements from ethics and religion. Kant, fulfilling this, first argues that metaphysical questions of reason, from theoretical aspect, have no certain answers. In practical reason, he establishes his moral foundations, based on own human being without any referring to metaphysical bases. In fact, Kant places human being a...
متن کاملEating Girls: Deleuze and Guattari’s Becoming-Animal and the Romantic Sublime in William Blake’s Lyca Poems
It is perhaps illustrative of animal philosophy’s strong intent to establish itself firmly in serious academia that it has recently shown interest in Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of becoming-animal, a concept which is so abstrusely theoretical and abstract that it appears to say very little on the animal as we know it.1 In her latest study When Species Meet (2007), Donna Haraway ...
